A few days ago, I was disappointed when I visited the abbaye of Clairvaux.
The potential of the historical site was under exploited and the buildings were badly maintained....
Today, I have seen the Citadel of Besancon which is everything Clairvaux is missing... They have significantly invested in restauration of the buildings, educative materials and presentations, clear and consistant road indications, etc.... up to the level where it is “trop”.’’’
The military site has a chapel, a zoo, an aquarium and several musea of different nature... it is like they did a brainstorm on what could be integrated on the site and did not dare to strike an idea... The citadel is clearly designed to receive school visits and offer them a full day program...
It made the visit worthwhile but less could be more...
Besancon city itself is nice... not too big but a lively historical centre...
